Leslie Williams, a retired businessman and former Pacific Grove councilman, died Saturday of cancer at
his home. He was 81. Born Dec. 15,1917, in Lindsay, he had lived in Pacific Grove for 75 years.Mr.
Williams graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1936, earned a bachelor's degree from San Jose
State College (now University), and fought in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of major.
He owned an insurance agency in Pacific Grove for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987. Mr. Williams
was also active in Pacific Grove politics. He was a trustee of the city's library from 1947 until 1951, and
served on the City Council from 1951 to 1952 and from 1962 to 1965. During his service to the council
Mr. Williams volunteered on various boards and also served as traffic commission¬er. "He studied the
issues like a surgeon would study anatomy," said Pacific Grove Councilman Morris Fisher. "The city's lost
a real senior statesman tor our community, but we live a better life here in Pacific Grove because of
him." Mr. Williams was a member of 4 Sons in Retirement and the Paisano Club. He was a former board
member of the Visiting Nurse Association and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Monterey. He
was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Pacific Grove, and volunteered on
the church's finance committee and the Methodist Foundation's scholarship committee. Mr. Williams
is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; two sons, Dennis Williams of Sunnyvale and Neil Williams of
Los Gatos; a daughter, Lucy Moore of Madison, Wis.; two brothers, Everett "Red" and Florus Williams,
both of Pacific Grove; and three grandchildren. Memorial services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at
First United Methodist Church of Pacific Grove. Burial will be held privately at El Carmelo Cemetery. The
Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be
sent to the Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 60, Pacific Grove 93950, to the
Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2480, Monterey 93942, or to the Salvation Army, 1491 Contra Costa,
Seaside 93955.
