Louise lived in China with her parents and sister.
Her maternal grandmother was the first Eurasian child of English and Chinese parentage registered at the
British Consulate. Louise was Austrian, English, and Chinese. Louise's father was the Chancellor and Acting
Consul for Spain. During WWI, he received an invitation extended to his family to become Spanish subjects.
Louise retained her Spanish passport until she married an American at age 17. Due to then existing laws, she
remained a person without a country for twenty years.
Since age twelve Louise traveled widely to eventually arrive in Pacific Grove, California. It was in the mid
'70s that I met Louise. She told me that her mother, Georgiana, had been a collector of Chinese needle art. One
cherished possession was the original 400 year old, embroidered 8 silk panels of the Eight Immortals. Her
mother purchased these exquisite panels in 1912 in Shanghai. Louise held them from this time up until her
death. The 8 silk panels were created by an unknown artist.
