Once you decide your
area of research, you
need to pinpoint the
time period. While
gathering information
on the area be sure to
also find the local
newspaper for your
chosen era. Take this
information, and your
library card to your lo-
cal Reference Librarian
and request microfilm
of the Publication and
time period. Be careful
of how many you are
possibly ordering. I re-
cently ordered a seven
year span of a publica-
tion, thinking they
would only send 2-3
rolls during that time.
They sent all TEN of
them. I had to wade my
way through all of them
during the two week
allotment. This may
seem like plenty of
time, but remember
you life can’t stop just
because you need to
be at the library, and
during their hours only.
I have yet to find a mi-
crofilm that could be
checked out. Try to
read your microfilm in
the mornings before
your eyes become too
tired. Take plenty of
“eye breaks”. Your
eyes become very tired
looking at the small,
blurry print, the moving
screen, etc.. Every
couple of pages, make
a point of looking
across the room.
Change your position
often. I find that after a
couple of hours with
my right hand using the
controls to forward the
film, my hand and fore-
arm become tight. Try
to stand up every 20
minutes and do some
slow stretching. All
these things help you
to be more alert in your
searching. Believe me,
I have found out the
hard way (missed arti-
cles) that your eyes will
glaze if you don’t take
breaks. It actually will
take you longer if you
don’t, because of hav-
ing to review pages
