Random House Inc., 663 pp., $30.00, ISBN# 978 1-4000- Grove Employee ami Youth
6789-3
The United Kingdom has been
ruled by two strong women for 123
years, Queen Elizabeth and Queen
Victoria. Queen Elizabeth 11, at age
85, has been Britain's monarch for
60 years. Queen Victoria ruled for
64 years. Individually this consti-
tutes a longer period in power than
any other world leader. With Queen
Elizabeth 11 celebrating her Diamond
Jubilee, and the 2012 Summer
Olympics, Britain will probably be
in the forefront of world news this
year. It is a good time to read a book
about Elizabeth 11, an interesting,
dutiful, and steady woman.
Whether you are pro-monarchy
or see Elizabeth's reign as an anti-
quated tradition that is a drain upon
the British taxpayers, this book is
interesting to read. It looks back at
the monarchy's last 60 years with
a well documented unauthorized
biography based upon over 200 in-
terviews. Elizabeth's father, George
IV, died at age 56, leaving Elizabeth
to become queen at age 26. She
was very young and inexperienced
to take on that responsibility Most
of her training for her position was
on-the-job with the help of such
notables as Winston Churchill. In
reading the book, I was surprised by
her lack of formal education.
The author also focuses on Eliza-
bethb private life and her privileged
but overly-sheltered childhood and
adulthood. It would appear that
Elizabethb only experience in so-
cial normalcy was during the World
War 11 years. She worked briefly as a
truck driver for the Auxiliary Territo-
rial Service and interacted on a daily
basis with non-royals.
Bedell Smith also explains that
although the queen has a lot of in-
fluence, she really doesn't "rule" in
the traditional sense. She must "re-
main scrupulously neutral" on not
only politics but any personal prefer-
ences. The author also reviews the
history and required pageantry of
the Queen's office. She discusses
the extensive housing and staffing
costs, as well as the travel, enter-
tainment, and ceremonial costs.
Much of it seems very lavish and
wasteful today considering the cup
rent economy and how badly many
British people are struggling. Bedell
Smith also points out the numer-
ous extended family members also
supported financially by the British
taxpayers. In some cases, these
members both embarrass and de-
grade the monarchy In my personal
opinion they seem to contribute little
to mankind. The author points out
that Elizabeth must lead a lonely and
somewhat isolated life yet is con-
stantly on display. She also focuses
on Elizabeth's quiet dignity and her
"enduring values of duty, integrity
and courage." Being pro-monarchy,
she sees the royal tradition continu-
ing on. It will be interesting to see
what occurs in the next 20 years
and how the upcoming heirs to the
throne adapt to the changing times.

PGHB April 18, pg.4, "Monterey Peninsula News, PG Museum of
Natural History Receives Accreditation": The museum was founded
in 1883.
The second paragraph attempts to give some historical context to
the events leading to the reaccreditation. Some, associated with the
Pacific Grove Museum of Natural Histoty Foundation, have taken issue
as to the reasons as to why the accreditation was delayed until this
year. Different parties within this city have differing versions as to the
accreditation process. We invite parties who can give us a history of
the process to submit a short (less than 400-word) article, concerning
the recent accreditation process. The bottom line is that the PG Mu-
seurn of Natural History retains its accreditation from the Association of
American Museums.
