Dear Lisa,
Thank you for the photocopies and thank you for the $5.00 donation.
The house in the one photo is 162 108 Street at the corner of Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove. The
house is still there, but it has been modified over the years. The photo was taken from Lighthouse looking
at the side of the house, which faces on 10'h Street. The hedges shown in the photo are now very high and
the bay window, which is still there, cannot be seen by standing on Lighthouse Avenue. Daniel Brown is
listed as the owner of this and surrounding lots beginning in 1889. This particular house was built in late
1890 or early 1891 and he owned itthrough early 1893. He may have actually lived in atent (or smaller
house) on an adjoining lot in 1889-90 until the house was built. I have enclosed the Sanborn map of the
street from 1897, as well as the early tax assessor infonnation.
The beach photo is harder to identify. Rock formations and sand dunes have changed over the years. If
you have ever visited Pacific Grove, you know that the shoreline is full of similar looking (at least to me)
rocks and beaches. Lover's Point was, and still is, a popular place, but has undergone many changes over
the years. It was also popular for young people to ride their bicycles along the shoreline into what is now
called Pebble Beach. I'm sorry that I cannot be more specific on the beach location.
I would love a copy of the photos for our files, along with any information on the Browns. I would like to
use the photos in future issues of our newsletter, the Board and Batten.
Sincerely,
