Helen Benedict Brewer Helen Benedict Brewer, of Shelton, Wash., was born into eternal life on March 5, 2014, just two days before her 94th birthday. Born in Bremerton, Wash., in 1920, she was the eldest daughter of Fred and Georgia Benedict. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1938. She pledged Sigma Kappa Sorority at the University of Washington and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching certificate. That same year, she married Richard C. (Dick) Brewer at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in BremeIton. Married women were not allowed to teach during World War 11, so she went to work for the Army Signal Corps and later the Seattle— Tacoma Shipyard. The couple made their home in Seattle, Minneapolis, Tuscaloosa and Honolulu before returning to Seattle. They moved to Shelton in 1960 where they lived in an historic home. After returning to St. Martin’s College and the University of Washington to renew her teaching certificate specializing in librarianship, she became the librarian at Shelton Junior High School in 1970, moving to the Angle Building . when the junior high transitioned to a middle school. She retired in 1982. Helen was active for many years at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church, Mason General Hospital Auxiliary, the American Association of University Women and other organizations. Her hobbies included reading, playing the piano, sewing, knitting, doing crossword puzzles, playing golf and bridge, entertaining and corresponding with family and friends. She enjoyed opera and other classical music. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Sana Kramer. She is survived by her four children; Richard Jr., Frederick, Sana and Patricia, as well as three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held April 5, 11:00 am at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church, 324 West Cedar, Shelton. A reception will follow.
